With the conclusion of week 1, there is only one thing to say - football is BACK!
And with the start of the season comes the inevitable pain, suffering and agony in the form of another fantasy season. Few things offer a glimpse at your own mortality than having your picks flounder at your fingertips as your tears drip on to the screen of your phone. No? Just me? Sorry. But for one of us, their team will have heroes rise, Herculian in their efforts, and earn their place in cerebral hall-of fame for all time (like Jamaal Charles, anyone remember him? The last good RB I’ve had). Anyways, week 1 gives us our first glimpse into which players will rise to glory or fall into oblivion. Speaking of...
That’s right- my team. In a division battle between teams who picked one after the other in the draft, it is Connor who picks up the victory. Of course in the year I go against the selection of the running back, it is the one I would have taken who puts in a sensational effort week 1. Knew it as soon as the pick went in. It is also unfortunate to play against Watson in week 1, as clearly he will be hurt at some point behind that line (wonder if Tunsil left the gas mask in Miami). A brutal showing by my Bears players on Thursday was made worse by just the watching of that Thursday night game. Well done to the Dowd Crowd with 2 RBs that look like studs, just now worry about the health of Hill and the previously mentioned Watson.
Next we had two of the Jersey boys facing off, and boy were some QB point left on the bench. In what may be the shock of the weekend, Frank did not start Matt Stafford with Luck’s retirement (we will miss you Andrew). Rich correctly picked Wilson over Lamar Jackson, who would have pushed him over the top for the win. I had told anyone who would listen to me (so really just to myself) that Jackson couldn’t throw and they ran a gimicky offense that teams could pick apart. Classic dot the opposite of Doug strategy. The boring Seattle RB game of Chris Carson was the high point scorer of the matchup telling you pretty much everything you need to know about it. First round of the Jug Handle Inn Bowl goes to Frank.
In what should have been the return game of Zeke for Brendan, it was actually Marlon Mack who was the running back to watch. Although neither were the top scorer in the matchup, as the mountain of a (RB) man Derrick Henry eventually got into top gear to torch the Browns for 30 points. Wow, another year of watching my former running backs elevate their game in the seasons after I have them. But at least we can all take solace in the Browns becoming the Browns once again, who would have thought. Anyways, Sanford and Sons need to find a backup kicker for their team or I see a rough future coming. Stick with what works.
In the game featuring the top scoring team, the Smoking Cutlers were just that. Ryan’s team scoresheet was littered with TDs, with the frog leading the way. Dan - who starts the defence playing the Saints at the Superdome? Although, I did find it funny that Dan’s top players are former Bill Sammy Watkins (40) and current Bill John Brown (19). Better luck with future Bills (unlikely). Anyway, this is a classic early season Ryan performance and it will be interesting to see if he can keep the pace the rest of the season. Maybe Ryan’s business school friends will do fun things on Thursdays and he forgets to change his lineups during the bye weeks. Who knows.
Speaking of the Superdome, who chooses Kyler Murray in his first start in the NFL over Drew Brees starting at home? Frank, uh, I mean the coin does I guess. And as long as Melvin Gordon stays out for the coin, things will look positive with Kamara and Ekeler at RB. Unless Antonio Brown’s situation has changed again for the 8,000th time over the past two weeks, it doesn’t look like Rog will get the 1-2 WR punch he was hoping for. Also, have you seen Antonio Brown’s Cameo birthday video? However, you chose Devonte Freeman for your team, a Falcon, so you had to know your team was cursed from the start.
And in what may be the shock of the week - Alex puts up 127 points for the win against Chris. Again with the QB selection - Dak over Brady and Matty Ice? What’s the saying with the blind squirel? So lovely, I am last in the division. Why do bad things happen to good people? Anyways, Chris couldn’t have felt good after the Thursday performance for the Packers and therefore his team, even with the GB W. Good news is Leveon looks ready to play. Now to get that high-octane Titans Matt LaFleur offense going.
Finally, for next week to continue with writing these I ask which would you rather see: Which marvel character or which soccer team you are?
Make sure to leave a 5 star review, don’t @ me.
